Testimonials

Dear Dr. Nilson,

Exactly 2 months ago (December 1, 2011) you did surgery on my husband, Hector Pachon, at the Surgery Center downstairs from your office. I'm not sure if you remember us, but I'm Dr. Cyr's patient (the one who was at UTHSCSA SOM) and my husband is a tall, red-headed Colombian. You repaired his labrum and shaved the calcifications on his AC joint. He was having pain on his right arm when he raised it and had tenderness on that AC joint for over a year. After surgery I took care of my husband and made sure he did all his exercises every day. I know very well that it's imperative for a patient to do everything the doctor says or else they can jeopardize their full recovery. In addition, I was terrified that my husband and best friend would have problems with chronic pain. I've been through that road so many times and the least I want for anyone I care and love is to go through that as well, even if it'sjust a "tiny bit" of that road. Last year I told Hector to make an appointment with you because you are part of OSI and I know Dr. Cyr trusts you. If Dr. Cyr trusts you, that means that not only you are a superb physician ,but you are an incredible and caring doctor. I'm glad we made the right decision.

Yesterday my husband surprised me by giving me the most amazing gift. He raised his arm all the way to the top without complaining of any pain. I'm sure anyone would've simply said "That's great, Hector! I'm glad for you" after seeing this. For me this meant so much more because I was incredibly excited and relieved that he is not going to deal with chronic pain in his arm anymore...at least not anytime soon. I felt happy that, despite having to deal with pain, taking care of him while he was recovering was so worth it. I'm glad that, as opposed to me, he didn't go through unnecessary treatments, failed surgeries, and debilitating pain by seeing the wrong doctors.

I'm glad you were the first person he saw and that you were the first one who did surgery on him. It's hard to describe in words what I felt when I saw him smiling while he showed me how he was able to raise his arm. I was speechless and crying of happiness. Pain relief is something that so many people take for granted. Thank you for giving me this amazing gift, Dr. Nilson. I love him so much and this means the world to me. I'm not sure how many lives I'll need to show my gratitude to Dr. Cyr (for everything he has done for me) and to you, for helping us. THANK YOU!

Sincerely,
Gaby Martínez-Pachon

"Had back surgery? Still in pain?"

That was the message of the bill board on Ih10 that changed my life. If you or someone you love is suffering from back problems, please save yourself and your family from the misery of multiple surgeries and see Dr. Cyr FIRST. My story prior to meeting Dr Cyr is nearly identical to so many of those that you have already read. Chronic pain for years, Chiropractors, injections, discectomy\'s, fusions you name it I tried it. It was nearing the two year anniversary of the first fusion (preformed by another Dr.) when the pain had become unbearable again. It was the end of June 2011 when I called my ex-surgeon for an appointment. I was informed that they could not possibly see me until Sept 29, (you may already know this story) of course I had no choice but to take the appointment. In the mean time, I called and sent my MRI report to three different doctors, and not one of them would touch me. Thank God. I was driving up IH10 at the end!

As of July when God showed me what I needed to see, that bill board. I called the number without much hope, and was shocked to learn that not only would they see me, they could do it in 20 days. "Unbelievable". So I walked (slowly, hunched and limping) into Dr. Cyr\'s office on Aug 25 2011. It was positively the best experience I have ever had with any doctor EVER. Eloy took more time, and taught me more about my back and how to read an MRI than anyone had in ten years of going through this. To say I was impressed would be a gross understatement. I was placed on the list for surgery, Nov 16 was the date. They told me if anything changed, they would move me UP on the schedule. (Yea right, I assumed they were just being nice.) No, it turn\'s out there are still people that \"say what they mean, and mean what they say\". I was moved up to Oct.25 2011. It\'s now Jan 28 2012, that\'s 3 months and 3 days since my surgery and 5 months since I walked in off the street. Last week I installed a new kitchen floor and today I built a fence at my house, and I did it myself with NO pain and better yet, no drugs.

Dr.Cyr, Dr.Dusty Wade, Eloy, and all the staff, changed my life. I am truly not the same man I was just 3 short months ago. If I can save one other person from suffering the same way I did for so many years, then it was worth the time it took to tell my story. Please do yourself and your family a favor and call Dr.Cyr’s office today. You deserve to enjoy your life again.

Sincerely Grateful;
Brad Byrd

Dr. Steven Cyr:

I have sat down to write this testimonial a million times since I hit my sixth month post-op. I am even now finding it very difficult to express my gratitude. Each words I chose just do not seem to be enough. My first encounter with Dr. Cyr and Eloy was approximately six years ago. And as anyone can attest it takes just a few minutes in their presence to know that there is a higher power guiding the work that they do. I was attending graduate school to earn a degree as a Nurse Practitioner and I was having a lot of difficulty with spending so much time in front of computers. I could never get comfortable in my chair. I scheduled my work in the hospital where I would never do two days in a row because at the end of the day I could barely walk.

About three years previous to meeting them I had a micro discectomy. It was partially successful in that I was no longer having shooting pains down my leg however I continued to have debilitating back spasms. I simply resigned myself to believe this would be my walk through the aging process. I had heard a joke once the punch line went, if you don't wake up every day without an ache or a pain then you is dead. I thought everyone had to go bed for two days after working out or a 12 hour shift. I used to say if this is what forty feels like then I don't want to be fifty.
My first encounter with Dr. Cyr and Eloy lasted approximately 3 hours.

Eloy examined me and discussed symptoms that I had not recognized as relating to my back. He also spent a considerable amount of time discussing Dr. Cyr‚s knowledge, education and skill. His enthusiasm was very contagious. Dr. Cyr spent at least an hour and a half explaining the findings in my MRI and back x-ray. I had at tear in the disk above where I had the micro discectomy and the previous surgical area was unstable and the disc space was completely flat. He told me I would need further unpleasant testing and that conservative measures should be taken before I made the decision to have any surgery. He informed me he believed he could make the back pain go away.

Even though I had severe pain on a daily basis I did not feel I had the time for more testing and I was extremely afraid of the post- operative pain because when I woke from my last back surgery it felt as though someone had taken a hammer to my back. I told myself a back fusion was something that old people needed to get. I spent six years with persistent debilitating pain all the way through school. I had to take a desk job and completed graduate school doing course work in my bed with a lap top. Before each clinical rotation I got injections thinking it would make it easier to get through standing on my feet. I spent every night in my Jacuzzi and hired someone to clean my home.

On the last day of my last semester Eloy came and spoke in my class. I told myself I would take the time to deal with my back after graduation a week after I graduated I found out my husband was being transferred out of state. So I put it off again. I spent the first six months in bed, then I started working again with same viscous cycle. My husband retired and proceeded to complete his masters at UTSA. He had to commute back and forth the summer of 2010 so I decided to spend that time doing the work up for my surgery. I had my surgery the Friday before Labor Day September 2010. The day before surgery I could barely walk through the airport. I looked so bad at the airport an attendant ran up to me with a wheel chair.

When I woke up from the anesthesia Dr. Cyr was there he asked how much of my pre-surgical pain had gone away. I thought for a minute and ironically it was a 100% gone. I am a year out now and the only regret I have is not having done something sooner. I am actually currently training for a half marathon. What‚s really funny is I cannot remember the name of the physician that delivered my three children or the names of the physicians that did my micro discectomy or hysterectomy. But the day I had had enough Dr. Cyr‚s and Eloy‚s names came to mind immediately.

I am so excited by the work being done at OSI that I really wanted to effect a change in the lives of other individuals that are suffering. I believe that is the best form of gratitude is to assist others in determining the appropriate path for their care. Even if you are weary about surgery or have had bad experiences just spend some time with a provider at OSI the enthusiasm is addictive.

Thank you Dr. Cyr, Eloy and everyone that makes OSI run smoothly now I am looking forward to fifty and sixty.

Did you know that wounded animals can be some of the most dangerous? Many are already weary of people and tend to lash out in fear at those who try and help them. I was much like that wounded animal when I first walked into The Orthopaedic & Spine Institute and met Dr. Cyr. With an overwhelming fear of back surgeons, I lashed out at him in terror and so much pain... all because of another surgeon that NEVER should have been a doctor. My back problems started over twelve years ago at the age of 24. I had intense sciatic pain in my left leg. After nine months and several treatments with no proper diagnosis, the pain in my leg and back almost drove me to the brink of insanity!

After finally ordering X-rays on my back, my doctor told me I had bad disks and sent me to a neurosurgeon. The neurosurgeon diagnosed me with degenerative disk disease. I had back-to-back surgeries in January and February of 2000. They included a partial discectomy and sciatic nerve repair, a full discectomy and laminectomy, plus they had to clear out two infections. After going to rehab and learning how to walk again, I didn't have too many problems with my back until 2005. I started to have issues with my sciatic nerve in my left leg again and intense lower back pain. The neurosurgeon that performed my previous surgeries had retired, so I was referred to another in his group, Dr. Y. I met with him in June. After looking at the MRI, he told me that I had ruptured and torn discs and needed a three level fusion.

I trusted him because he was a colleague of my previous surgeon, he assured me I would be up walking the day after surgery, and that I would be better than I'd been in years. He did not feel the need to meet with me again or order any tests in the five months between his diagnosis and surgery. I had the fusion in early October. I woke-up with pain in my right leg and intense pain in my back.

The physical therapist came the day after surgery to help me up to walk. When I stood up my legs gave out and I hit the floor. Dr. Y proceeded to lecture me on how this was my fault. That his "surgery was perfect". It would not be the last time I'd hear those words. I spent three weeks back in rehab learning how to walk, again. I had a very hard time lifting my right foot, my legs would still give out on me, and I started experiencing numbness in both legs and feet. After being discharged, neither Dr. Y nor his staff gave me any instructions on how to care for my fusion. A few weeks later while household shopping, my legs gave out again. I had to be helped off the floor and into my car. As they sat me in the passenger seat, I could no longer feel my legs. I thought I was paralyzed! My husband got me and took me to Dr. Y's office. After some X-rays, he proceeded to stick huge needles in my feet, even drawing blood. Although I was unable to feel it, what he did horrified me, angered my husband, and scared my son. He told me that my paralysis was all in my head. He again stated that this was my fault and that his "surgery was perfect".

Dr. Y then did one of the most dreadful things, I think, any doctor could ever do! He prescribed me high doses of Hydrocodone and Oxycontin without ever telling my husband or me how addictive these drugs are. Basically, he drugged me up to shut me up. I never saw him again after that day.   I spent the next six months as a moody zombie. I don't remember any of it! Although technically I was there, I missed out on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, and both my kids' birthdays. According to my family, I became a different person and was almost impossible to live with. I said things and acted in ways that were NOT me. The drugs took control and I faded away.

Dr. Y stole 6 months of my life from me, because I complained and begged him to see that something was wrong! Thanks to my husband and family doctor, I was successfully weaned off the drugs. I spent the next few months teaching myself how to walk again! I wound up with permanent loss of feeling in my legs, partial drop foot, and loss of reflexes in my right leg... the leg I never had any problems with before the fusion. Months later, as I continued to try and piece my life back together, I received a call from Dr. Y's office informing me that the cadaver bone fragments used in my fusion cages could be contaminated with HIV and Hepatitis C. They told me I needed to be tested. I felt like the floor had dropped out from under me! When were Dr. Y and his "perfect surgery" going to stop trying to destroy me?! How many more ways could he hurt me?! I spent two agonizing weeks wondering if I could have unknowingly exposed my family to such horrible diseases!

Although it wouldn't have been my fault, if I had exposed them, I don't think I could have lived with the guilt. Thank God, I tested negative on both counts. I swore then and there, that I I I would NEVER let anyone EVER cut my back open again! In January of 2010, I started having the most intense back pain of my life! I had to start taking Hydrocodone again, just to take the edge off. My husband, being concerned, went on-line and researched back doctors in San Antonio. I didn't,t believe it at the time, but now I do believe God led him to find Dr. Steven Cyr and the Orthopaedic & Spine Institute. Due to my "declaration" and absolutely terrifying fear of back surgeons, I flat out refused to consider seeing Dr. Cyr. As the months went by, the pain kept me from driving and even going upstairs to my room. I was in so much pain; I couldn't stop the tears from falling. My husband made one last heartfelt plea to me to just go and meet with Dr. Cyr. I finally gave in and made an appointment in June. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made, I just didn't know it yet. My husband took me to my appointment knowing all too well that I would have bolted if I came alone. As I sat in the waiting room, anxiety, fear, and anger at Dr. Y started to build up inside of me.

When I reached the exam room, I was ready to burst. When Dr. Cyr walked in, the memories of all I had been through were so vivid in my mind that when I looked at Dr. Cyr, all I could see was Dr. Y, so I completely shut down. My husband told Dr. Cyr my symptoms and history. Dr. Cyr examined me and sent me for X-rays and a MRI. I don't think I spoke more than a few words to him. I,m sure he could tell I wanted nothing to do with him, or what he had to say. In my mind, he was Dr. Y. I never gave Dr. Cyr a chance. When my husband dragged me back for the results, I knew deep inside it was going to be bad. I just wasn't prepared for how bad. Dr. Cyr told me that my fusion had broken and that I would need surgery to fix it. He showed my husband and me the MRI results and X-rays. As clear as day, we could see two screw bolts floating in my back. The rods had pulled back and ripped them off! The top cage never fused and Dr. Y didn't even bother to fuse the middle disc! I guess it's a miracle the bottom one fused. Dr. Y had done a bad fusion. He'd botched his "perfect surgery". It felt like someone had gut punched me! I needed yet ANOTHER surgery! Five years later, Dr. Y was still inflicting damage on me! Unfortunately, he wasn't around for me to lash out at. I turned instead to Dr. Cyr and took it out on him. I told Dr. Cyr that I was going to get other opinions and that I didn't trust a word he said. I believe I actually told him, "You're a surgeon, and you just want to cut!" ! He then told me he wouldn't touch me unless I quit smoking. I was never told by Dr. Y that smoking could prevent your fusion from healing! Dr. Cyr said that whether or not I wanted him to do the surgery, he'd give me a prescription to help me quit. I left with the prescription, my X-rays, MRI results, and a transcript of his opinion on what I needed. Even though I was a brat, he kindly gave me everything I needed to get help. I discussed my situation with family and got several opinions, all of which agreed with Dr. Cyr. I decided to quit smoking and make another appointment. This time on my own, I met with Dr. Cyr and proceeded to grill him like the prime suspect in a murder investigation. I asked him every question under the sun about his medical background and why he was in San Antonio. I questioned his abilities as a surgeon and integrity as a man. Not once did he ever take offense. He politely answered every question and assured me that he understood my fear, anger, and skepticism. He told me that I was not the first casualty of Dr. Y that he had helped. Still scared and unsure, he introduced me to James Marr, his clerical supervisor.

James gave me a firsthand opinion of Dr. Cyr's surgical skills and he understood the pain I was in. Dr. Cyr had performed surgery on James. Due to James' understanding of what I've gone through and how kind Dr. Cyr had been to me so far, I agreed to the s! urgery. Dr. Cyr sent me for tests to check everything before surgery, unlike Dr.Y. On the morning of surgery, I was a hot mess! My nerves were shot and my emotions were all over the place. Just as we were pulling into the hospital parking lot, my phone rang. It was Dr. Cyr. One of his surgical team members had become ill and surgery would have to be canceled. I just started crying. Dr. Cyr apologized profusely to me and said he'd get me in as soon as possible. I was relieved because of my fear of surgery, but because of how much pain I was in, I was disappointed at the same time. I couldn't continue talking and handed the phone to my husband. This was on a Friday. Instead of starting his weekend early, Dr. Cyr spent the rest of the day putting together a surgical team for the next morning... on a Saturday! How many doctors do you know that would give up their weekends to do surgery?! Especially to help someone that had been anything but nice to them?! Dr. Cyr did! Instead of working on his "golf game", like most doctors I've dealt with, he helped me! Even though I growled, bared teeth, and snapped, Dr. Cyr still wanted to help this "wounded animal". I believe Dr. Steven Cyr is one of the finest, kindest, most selfless human beings to walk this earth! He truly went the extra mile for me, and I will ALWAYS be grateful to him!

Saturday morning I was back at the hospital for surgery. It was hard to believe, but almost to the day, five years after my first fusion, I was having it redone... right this time! I was nervous and scared in pre-op, worrying that something would go wrong. I had cried so much that I was dehydrated and the nurses had a difficult time getting an IV in me. Dr. Cyr came in and seeing the sheer terror on my face, patted my hair and said to me with such conviction, "Amy, I promise I will take good care of you! I will treat you as if you were my own sister!" Even with my fear of paralysis and my apprehension of surgeons, something in his eyes and the tone of his voice soothed me. Right then and there, I let go and gave it to Jesus. I did something I never thought I would ever do again... I trusted a surgeon. This time, when I awoke from surgery, I felt better.

I was able to get up and walk the next day! Dr. Cyr had kept his promise! He'd taken good care of me! He was very specific in my after care. He made sure that my family and I had instructions and the equipment necessary to help my fusion heal properly this time. There have been some setbacks since then, times when I wasn't sure I had made the right decision, but Dr. Cyr, his partner Eloy Castañeda, and James Marr have always done everything they can to make things right and to help me in any way they can. The staff of the Orthopaedic & Spine Institute is the best! I could never have imagined that people with such a passion to help others exist! The time, patience, and effort they put into each and every patient are incredible! Melissa at the front desk always has a smile and a kind word for me. I can always count on a hug, a laugh, and an inquiry on how I am from Hector and James. Dr. Klotz is always able to motivate me to do my best in physical therapy. Dr. Cyr and Mr. Castañeda ALWAYS give me their undivided attention, answer all my questions, put me at ease and NEVER pressure me to hurry up. The time you spend in the waiting room is more than made up for by the time they give to you in the exam room. They welcome you with op! en arms and treat you like family!

I thank God every day for putting them in my life! I'm now 8 months out from surgery. The feeling in my legs is returning and I'm getting movement back in my drop foot. I'm doing better than I have in years! More than just the physical healing, I am mentally and spiritually healing. Through Dr. Cyr and the Orthopaedic & Spine Institute, God has worked miracles in me! Dr. Cyr and Mr. Castañeda have helped give a semblance of normalcy back to my life! Thanks to their top notch surgical skills, I'm able to get out of the house and be an active member of my family again. James Marr and his understanding of the pain, helplessness, anger, and fear I've lived through, has inspired me to go to school in hopes of making a career out of helping others that have gone through what I have, the way James does. I feel like I've been given my life back!

I will never be able to thank Dr. Cyr enough! Yes, he's a brilliant surgeon, but more than that, Dr. Cyr is a phenomenal human being! He truly cares about helping people. He goes far above and way beyond the call of duty to do it. He has given back all that Dr. Y had taken from me. I will always be sorry I did not give Dr. Cyr a fair chance from the start. His patience and the gentle way he has cared for me is what has mattered the most. To Dr. Cyr, Mr. Castañeda, James Marr, and the rest of the staff of the Orthopaedic & Spine Institute, THANK YOU for all you have done for me and your continued care and support. I am and always will be grateful. God bless y'all!

Sincerely,

Amy Gagnon

Dear Reader I want you to know that Dr. Stephen J. Cyr gave my life back to me,

I was seeing a life ahead using a wheel chair. I could not walk from the bedroom to the kitchen without experiencing severe pain in my lower back and then a stabbing pain shooting to my left thigh. Standing for longer than a few moments would also induce the pain. I was barely "getting along" and it was clearly getting worse.

Prior surgery ten years ago in Florida had resulted in a Staph infection of two vertebrae. It took the surgeon and medical staff three weeks to diagnose the problem and while the infection was finally brought under control, the damage to the vertebrae had caused them to fuse and, of course, not in perfect alignment. As I involuntarily and voluntarily tried to correct this misalignment, and sought every remedy to avoid further surgery, including supervised physical therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic manipulation and computer controlled traction, with only occasional temporary relief, over the years I developed fairly severe scoliosis.

Still fearful of surgery but learning that Dr. Cyr had a reputation for correcting problems created by others, even including me, I went to him for diagnosis and to see if he would treat my condition. Setting aside Dr. Cyr's top tier education and professional credentials, he and his colleague Eloy Castaneda, and supporting professional staff headed by James Marr are the most caring and careful medical practitioners I have ever met. Though Dr. Cyr was almost apologetic that, unlike others, he moved slowly in preparation and during surgery, there is only one word to describe his approach and that is "rigorous." Still slightly scared, I didn't want anything less.

While the pre-operation experience of radiology from various angles and "discogram" investivations, was time consuming, it just continued to confirm that careful preparation was going on before embarking on surgery lasting 12 hours. Yes I have extensive bone grafts and an embedded titanium structure supporting the bone grafts while they heal and later, but today, over 6 months later, I feel none of the pre-operation pain. I'm looking forward to begin physical therapy to further loosen up my sore and tight lower back muscles, but I just returned from a long flight business trip to San Jose, CA and we recently drove from San Antonio to Charleston, SC without a problem.

Even at 75 years old, my wife and I can now look forward to visiting our grandchildren in Seattle at will, or do any other kinds of travel or event attendance we want to do. It is impossible to put into appropriate words my thanks to Dr. Cyr and his professional staff.

Sincerely,

Mr Sims

I am writing this on behalf of my husband, Clinton Lindsay,

Clint has had several health issues over the last 6 years; one of them being a spinal fusion (not performed by your group) which here it is now and the problem was never fixed. After finding out that, Dr.Cyr was here in SA through a mutual friend of theirs we knew he was the one we had to see about the back problems my husband was still incurring. Dr. Cyr took Clint under his wing as if he was his own brother; after a few months of testing they decided it was time to have it redone (refused).

Well, call me crazy for writing this letter so soon after, the surgery was on Nov. 8, 2010 and here it is the 3rd of Dec. and my husband already couldn't’t be any more relieved at this point. He went from having a pain level off the charts to only feeling about a 3, some days even a 1 or 2. It is truly amazing for him, I honestly can't remember the last time he felt this good and could actually show happiness rather than constant pain on his face. I just can't wait to report back 6 months & even a year from now to let you know how well he feels.

Dr Cyr (and staff) is the friendliest bunch of dr's we have EVER encountered. Thank you for such a wonderful experience.

Sincerely,

Hannah Lindsay
(wife of patient)

Dear Dr. Cyr,

I waited several days to email you because I didn't want to get my hopes up, as I've done it many times and gotten disappointed afterwards. However, now I have no doubt that what I'm about to say is true and accurate. Although I still have surgical pain (as expected), that excruciating pain that made my life a living hell IS GONE. I wanted to cry the other day when the nurse's aid was helping me take a shower and asked me to stand up for a little bit.

Changing positions, as you remember, was one of the worst things that would trigger my pain. I had no pain at all...none whatsoever. It's still hard for me to write this right now because I can't believe it. I've never felt such a drastic change in such a short period of time. I know the surgery was long and complex, and that your team and you did everything you could to fix all the problems. I knew you were going to help me and fix all these problems, that's why I didn't bother to ask for more opinions because I really trusted you and I was not wrong about choosing you as my surgeon. Saying "thank you" will never never be enough to show my infinite gratitude. This really means A LOT to me because you've given me my life back.

I'm optimistic that I will be able to go back to medical school soon  and work on becoming the type of physician I've always wanted to be - like you, an incredibly humane, caring, and outstanding doctor.

I agree that the norm is not good enough and I've always thought I  would be more than that. I know that it has been a privilege to wear a patient's gown before actually wearing a white coat because it has given me a perspective of medicine that students have difficulty understanding ...trying to be in their patient's shoes.

This will make me a better doctor because I can relate with a patient's fears, hopes, feelings. Even though it's hard to say it after these 6 long and painful years, I'm grateful for living this experience. I thank God every day for giving me the chance to meet you. I know  you're an angel!

I'll see you on the 28th...

Sincerely,

This letter is to thank The Lord for creating the heart and passion to help those less fortunate within Dr. Steven Cyr. My name is Mum Toby to many who know me in the mission field. When I first met Dr. Cyr he was contagious! I loved him the minute he shook my hand and greeted me like we were old friends. I've been struggling with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA ) for 35 years. Back in 2007 I had been struggling with severe lower back pain for over fifteen years. I figured it was due to my JRA and was living with it.

Dr. Cyr knew we ran a small non-profit called Wheels of Love, by providing manual wheelchairs to those in need in Kenya; but the pain was becoming unbearable which made the mission trips very painful. Once Dr. Cyr took all the tests we scheduled my operation and I headed off on a five week mission trip to fit kids with wheelchairs in Kenya. Knowing when I came back I was ready for my operation. I love Dr. Cyr because he let us pray about the surgery (and for him) and because Dr. Cyr had 50% of my back I knew God had the other 50%, I would be just fine.

Just to let you know the mission trip was grueling and I was looking forward to some rest and relaxation. Little did I know the day of the operation Dr. Cyr discovered my back was fractured and fixed it right there. I remember waking up in CCU and seeing his beautiful smile saying Toby everything is fine your back was fractured but I fixed it. After hearing he took care of everything and the pain medication kicked in I rested peacefully for a long time. Just to let you know I am wheelchair bound and have had all my joints replaced and what leaves me bound to the wheelchair is being without hip joints.

In stating all that I am so thankful for Dr. Cyr for putting me back together so I can go and help others half way around the world. Just to let you know the operation was Nov. 7 2007. Dr. Cyr stated it takes about a year for the fusion to become solid with someone like my condition. So Nov. 17, 2008 I departed on a 11 month mission trip to Kenya. Ninety-seven children received brand new manual wheelchairs that were made in Kenya. Dr. Cyr you have part ownership in ALL that I do for The Lord. I cannot thank you enough for being patient with me and loving me as your own.

Your Sister and Friend and Patient,

Mum Toby Miller

I feel compelled to document a series of events that has changed my life. In reading it, I hope and pray it will also change yours. I was born with scoliosis and 3 other diseases of the spine, and have always had back problems: pain every day, difficulty with walking, and daily activities. At 11 years of age, I had my first spinal surgery in which the Harrington rod procedure and spinal fusion were performed. I spent the next 11 months in a body cast and confined to bed. After the cast came off, I had to learn how to walk again. The pain was still there, but I dealt with it; as my Father said,” (I) never complained.”

I would say that I was feeling a little tired and would go lay down. At 21, I had my second spinal surgery where they removed the Harrington rods and more spinal fusion. I spent a mere 3 months in bed that time; and the pain was still there. I was convinced that that was the way it was always going to be. Over the next 30 + years I have seen many doctors and they have all said the same thing, after a five minute appointment; “You have arthritis in your spine. We can do cortisone injections but nothing more. You will just have to live with it.” And live with it I did. I grew accustomed to a very high pain threshold; so I just managed. Managing became harder and harder and I was beginning to have a difficult time dealing with it.

In Sept 2006 my husband was transferred to San Antonio TX. We were thrilled to be moving, as San Antonio is now home and we could not be more pleased with the city and her people. In the 3+ years we have been living here, my back became much more difficult to bear and I saw another few doctors and received the same answers as before. I restore vintage wedding gowns and repair lace, alter modern wedding gowns, and make veils. The modern gowns are very heavy; it was very painful for me to work on them. I continued to work but that was becoming increasingly impossible as well. In October of 2009, my husband Mike and I decided that I needed a break; hoping that some time off would help me heal. We decided that I would no longer take new client brides; I would cancel all that I had not started, finish up what I had, and get some much deserved rest.

Friday November 20, 2009, was my last day of fittings. I had many appointments that day and I was barely hanging on. Most brides were coming to pick up their gowns and 2 brides still needed fittings in order for me to finish their gowns. At 10 AM the phone rang and a lovely voice said, “Hello, my name is Cali Rose. I am getting married and I need alterations on my gown.” As she was speaking to me, it was as if the volume was turned down on her voice, and in its place a loud voice in my ear simply said “TAKE THIS BRIDE.” I quickly thought that I don’t want another 10 hours of work. I can’t handle it. But I recognized His Voice, and then I said to Miss Rose, “I like you, can you come today?” She said yes and stopped by a few hours later.

I helped her try on her pretty halter style Alencon lace gown and I started discussing the alterations that were needed on the bodice. She looked me straight in the eyes and said, “What is wrong with your back?” I said that I just have a little backache. She sat down and got into the same pose as the statue Rodin’s The Thinker, and asked again what is wrong with my back. I thought, this is a little weird, but told her I have been having some pain and just was hurting pretty badly, and she said, “And?” I said let’s look at your bodice, and she insisted that I tell her about my back.

So I asked her if she really wanted to know. She did. So I explained that I was at the end of my rope, the pain had become so bad that I could no longer function, and today was the last day I was seeing Brides. She then told me that she was a surgical spinal cord monitor and worked with fifty orthopedic surgeons in San Antonio. And then she said, if anyone that she loved needed back care that there was only one doctor she would recommended and his name is Dr. Steven Cyr; and ,by the way, she was doing surgery with him the next day - Saturday - and if I was serious, she would speak with him on my behalf. It usually takes 6 months to get into see him but I said that I would be thrilled to speak with him.

Only then did we finally get around to her fitting. I understood what was needed to make her dress perfect; she had mentioned that she loved Swarovski crystals. As God would have it, my next appointment did not show up. This has only happened four times in the last eighteen years, so this gave us all the time we needed to chat and finish her fitting. In the next twelve hours we emailed and talked several times. She asked me to call her at 11:00 AM the next morning -which I did. She was in surgery with Dr. Cyr and his team and she took my call anyway and said “stepping out.” Then I heard a man’s voice ask if the call was from Diana? She said yes, then stepped out of surgery, and briefly spoke with me to tell me that, as a favor to her, Dr. Cyr’s team member would see me on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving!

I arrived at 10:00 AM for a 10:15 appointment, filled out the great amount of information needed, and at 10:20, was called into the back office. I met with a wonderful man named Eloy Castaneda, who is Dr. Cyr’s right hand man. He brought me into a room where they do low level x-rays, and with a technician, took several x-rays of my spine. He said these x-rays are not clear enough so additional x-rays would be needed. I thought that was the appointment, so I asked him if I could tell him a few issues I was dealing with. He said, “Oh, we have just begun. This is just the meet and greet.” He then introduced me to his staff and told them if I needed anything to be sure to get it done.

This was all so amazing to me. Well, we talked about everything related to my spine and he told me that he felt that they could help me. This caused me to have a meltdown, because these were the words I had wanted to hear for so long: finally, some HOPE. Eloy was so sweet, he held me as I cried and kissed my head, then he looked me right in the eyes and said, “There are two things I must tell you. We are not God, nor are we Jesus Christ, but we work with both to get you and us through this.” I was amazed. I now had additional validation that I was in the correct place and these were my doctors. Praise God!

He then asked me if I was willing to do everything he needed me to do on a diagnostic level, as they do not do exploratory spinal surgery. He also mentioned that I would not love him during these tests as I did that first day. I told him, yes, whatever it takes. One of the amazing things about this appointment was that he was with me from 10:20 AM to 4:30 PM. I am not kidding! What doctor’s offices do that? During the six hours I was there he had two associates get all my medical records - and I mean ALL of them - delivered to his office, or emailed or faxed to him.

This, once again, is the day before Thanksgiving, and I was his only patient. During my visit I had more x-rays taken than I had ever had taken at one time ever before. He took full body x-rays and everything in between. Then, after I left his office, I went to get blood work as well. What a day! God is All Encompassing and The Greatest Physician. Eloy Castaneda is the most caring and passionate man I have ever met, his heart is a beacon of light and love, and I felt totally secure with him on my side.

When I met Dr. Cyr, he was as wonderful as Eloy Castaneda, answered all my and Mike’s questions, did not rush us in any way. He was direct, loving, extremely caring and competent, and also brought God into the conversation. Unbelievable. My husband Mike said that this surgical team is the real reason why God sent us to San Antonio, God has placed us here, for me to finally get the help I need. Over the next several weeks Eloy set up a number of tests to find out what was really going on with my spine that the x-rays could not show. He was wrong; I still loved him even though the battery of tests was as brutal as he said they would be.

During the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays, I finished my last two brides, and gave Cali’s gown my full attention. After a few fittings I finished her pretty gown, I also added 1200 Swarovski Crystals! She came in with her sister for her final fitting and her crystal reveal (She did not know I was adding any crystals) it was a wonderful moment. She just loved it. Another thing I was guided to do was to tell her the story of God’s voice in my ear, and how I wasn’t taking any more Brides. Also I told her that she was my Angel, and had changed my life.

As my gift to her, I did not charge her anything for her gown, alterations, or crystals as it was my honor and great pleasure to do this. God had put her into my life and it changed me forever. I believe that I would not have found this doctor, as I had thought I had seen every orthopedic surgeon in San Antonio. After all the tests, the doctors had made a decision of what was needed and surgery was to be scheduled. As God’s time is perfect, my surgery was scheduled and cancelled three times, I had to turn it over to the Great Physician, as I was barely functioning. For my intake, the day surgery was to be undertaken; Cali was present and prepared me for surgery.

This was particularly sweet, as she was not on call that afternoon and was leaving for her bachelorette party later that night. It was a very complicated surgery. Dr. Cyr went in from the abdomen and the back and fixed all my problems. And I mean they really fixed everything. Surgery was over 8 hours long and the recovery time will be 1 ½ years. My surgery was on April 7, 2010. It is now June 16, 2010 and my surgery was 10 weeks ago. I have had no pain for 7 weeks. Yes my back and belly ache a little, but the old pain is totally gone and there is no new pain! Two hours after surgery I asked them to remove the morphine pump and by week three I had weaned off of ALL medication. I do not take anything anymore because I have no pain that needs to be relieved! Praise God!

I started my own therapy by doing laps around the couch, then, after 6 weeks, got the OK to go outside and walk ‘the malls.’ I used a walker for 2 weeks, then a cane, and now I bring the cane if it will be a big walk, but for short distances - no cane. I also walk in the deep end of the pool; 300-500 steps every day, weather permitting. I can hardly believe it. I saw Eloy at six weeks out from surgery and he said that the fusion and bone grafts and titanium screws were in perfect alignment, and that my back was as healed at 6 weeks as most patients were at four months. I wear a lovely back brace every day and in the next 6 weeks that also will be tapered off. This is my time to heal and I am taking advantage of it. I have changed my diet and have lost 25 pounds, and have gained ¾” in height! I am spending more time with God and feel blessed beyond belief. Thank you Lord, for giving me this gift and restoring my life. I look forward to starting physical therapy in October.

I want to thank my amazing doctors and team members and to all the wonderful staff at the Orthopaedic & Spine Institute for saving my life and allowing me be whole again. I have not felt this great in over forty years; I look forward, with joy, to the future. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. My husband Mike, sister Kaiya, and my father Irv, also thank you. There are no words that can express my gratitude.

Sincerely,
Diana Ackerman-Herschel

I’m writing this testimonial regarding all the gratitude I have for Dr Cyr and his team,

I was originally diagnosed with a Sacral Chordoma in May/2007 at my hometown hospital, who advised me they hadn’t seen anything like this in 20 years. I wasn’t given a good prognosis and was told I would not walk again or have bowel/bladder control after surgery. My heart was crushed at that moment, to think of this life changing event happening to me, at the age of 30 years old.  I thought about how that would affect my family and children. I decided to get a 2nd opinion at Mayo Clinic where I was seen by Dr Yazsemski, who diagnosed me with a Giant Cell Tumor of the sacrum (which is a benign, aggressive tumor).

The following week after being seen at Mayo Clinic, my family was moving to Texas. I was terrified to move to another state, not knowing what my next step was. Dr Yazsemski referred me to Wilford Hall to see Dr Cyr & Dr Frink. They all gave me hope; in fact Dr Yazsemski flew from Mayo to assist with the surgery. I spent several hours in the OR for tumor debulking, reconstruction of my sacrum that was destroyed, L4-L5 fusion and several weeks of physical therapy. I was starting to feel better when found out there was recurrent tumor. I spent several hours in the OR again, but this time went thru 6 weeks of radiation treatments. Dr Cyr gave me my options, and I opted to go thru radiation treatments at Wilford Hall.  He gave me hope and talked to me like I was part of his family. He was awesome at keeping my family informed with detailed information regarding my care. Thankful enough, the radiation was a success! I’ve since had cryosurgery for another recurrence, but tumor was caught early so a minor surgery.

I’m grateful to have been in such wonderful care, Dr Cyr and his team will “always” hold a special place in our hearts. I’m still walking and enjoying my life with my family and friends, and couldn’t ask for anything more.

Meeting Dr. Steven Cyr and his Nurse Practitioner Eloy Casteneda was the best thing that could have happened to me and my family. I managed my pain as long as I could by myself, because of the fear that I had about see a doctor about my back fearing the worst. After receiving a few ESI injections by Dr. Micheal Mckee, I was referred to Dr. Steven Cyr and his team. Upon my first visit, my fears were instantly calmed by Dr. Cyr and his team. They explained my conditions and my options. It was nice to have options and be able to choose what was going to happen. Dr. Cyr and Eloy took time to meet with my wife and I and discuss the procedures that we were looking at having performed. My mind was at ease and we were planning a Micro Disctectomy. Our surgery was planned and performed with ease. My condition was a complicated one, so it was not surprising to us when I needed a second surgery which we avoided the first time around, but knew it would eventually happen.

I was seen and surgery was scheduled as soon as possible. I have since been pain free and can now enjoy activities that were so painful before. I have been pain medication free since 3 weeks after my second surgery. If someone would have told me two years ago that 2 rods, 5 screws would fix my back, I would have said \"NO WAY!\" I am now 9 months out from my surgery and never would have believed that I could feel this good. I am days away from starting physical therapy and cannot wait my progress.

Special thanks to,Dr. Steven Cyr, Eloy Casteneda, Dusty Rhodes, Hector, Kevin and James....

Y'all are truly the best!!!

In 2000 I was in a car accident which resulted in excruciating back pain. I went to physical therapy for months without any relief and then began seeing a pain management specialist. Prior to the accident I worked full time, went to school full time, kept up with the household chores, cooked daily, and had an active social life. During the next five years the pain became more difficult to live with. I had to quit school, could no longer work, and I was not able to focus on day to day activity. I was taking five different anti-depressants, 2 types of muscle relaxers, topamax, duragesic patches, & lortab. I honestly didn’t care if I even woke up.

The first time I was in Dr. Cyr’s office was in 2006 I had no idea of the impact he would have on my life. In July 2006 I had a 3 level cervical fusion and in May 2007 a 2 level lumbar fusion. Within three months of my second surgery I went back to work. I lost about 70 pounds just because I could get out of bed and do things on a daily basis. I was able to stop all of the anti-depressants except for one. I occasionally take a muscle relaxer or a pain killer. In Oct. 2009 I had a 6 level cervical fusion which I am currently recovering from. I am even going back to school in January. Dr. Cyr & Eloy are my life savors because without them I don’t know where I would be now. They gave me my life back.

There is no way to express the gratitude that I have for finding such a compassionate, caring surgeon & surgical team who are nothing less than a perfectionists and a role models, in my eyes for all medical professionals.

I’m excited this year to join my family and friends in celebrating the holidays. Last year at this time, it was a different story. I was in constant agony from one herniated disk and three degenerated disks in my lower back. I had no interest in food or fun and being at work was an ordeal.

From the moment I opened my eyes in the morning to the time I closed them at night I was in excruciating pain. I was either standing or lying down as sitting was unbearably painful. So that’s what I did; stood for eight hours at work each day, stood at my kitchen counter to eat and do homework for my online classes or lay in bed. My entire day consisted of attempting to manage and minimize the back, hip and leg pain. Some days were worse than others and when it became too much for me, someone would take me home. I was no longer driving because it was too painful, and dangerous, considering the pain meds I was taking.

Then I met Dr. Steven Cyr to discuss options. He told me a four level disk fusion was controversial and the alternative was to manage the pain with medication for years and years. I broke down. All hope of relief disappeared. How was I supposed to continue as I was? The pain increased with each month that passed. There seemed no hope for a normal life ever again.

After another visit with Dr. Cyr, he agreed to do the surgery. The surgery took thirteen and a half hours and initially I was afraid I made a mistake by having it, the pain was incredible. Despite that, I did everything I was supposed to do and followed the doctors’ orders after the surgery. Recovery has been long and is still in progress, but with amazing results. I can now sit for prolonged periods and don’t have any of the pain I had prior to surgery. When it’s cold, my back gets a little achy and I’m not as flexible as I once was. Those are very small inconveniences compared to life before surgery.

Every day I am thankful for Dr. Cyr and his commitment to patient care. After twenty months of suffering, I finally have my life back. I am blessed beyond words and excited about sitting, standing, walking and living. Thank you Dr. Cyr.

I am a patient of Dr. Steven Cyr at the San Antonio Orthopedic Institute, who was suffering with severe neck and shoulder pain. Dr. Cyr and his nurse practitioner, Eloy Casteneda, examined me thoroughly with physical nerve examinations, MRI's, and diagnostic x-rays. With that he and his staff would do everything in their power to help me.
?Since the first office visit, through surgery and post operative visits, Dr. Cyr and staff, have shown excellent professionalism. Dr. Cyr has exhibited compassion, empathy, above average bedside manner, and most of all, he listens intently to his patients and tries to see how he can best help him/her. That has been my experience. Dr. Cyr has saved my life. I would, and have been, recommending Dr. Cyr to whomever I feel would benefit from his extraordinary care. Thank you,

I have been suffering for over a decade with neck and back pain. I have been to several chiropractors since October of 2000 who just made sure that I kept coming back for adjustments 3 times a week for over 5 years - I had no relief. I had other doctors prescribe heavy pain medications that did nothing except make my mind spin. Eloy Castenada has been seeing me for the past 5 months. Yes, I have waited in the the waiting room for hours (for those of you complaining about waiting), but it is WELL WORTH THE WAIT!!! Eloy knows what he is doing, and takes his time to be certain that he can answer all my questions, explain every procedure and I always feel comfortable, cared for and loved by this man. Dr. Cyr and Eloy Castenada will be performing a major surgery on my neck the first week of November. Tonight I had my surgery consultation with the two of them. I was beyond nervous....completely petrified upon hearing the severity of the surgery I need to have done. However, after leaving the office, and having a good cry, I am unnaturally calm. I believe that both of these men are gifted by God. They know what they are doing, they are genuine, they answered my questions, they even gave me and my husband a well needed hug after the consultation. I have complete trust and faith that Dr. Cyr and Eloy will do their absolute best - and that my surgery will be a success. God Bless these men....and their staff. I am so eternally grateful........I'll let you know how the surgery comes out....until then.....have sunny days. :)

This letter is being written to express our most sincere appreciation and gratitude for not only your skill and knowledge as a surgeon, but the kindness and compassion you show your patients. Two years ago was an extremely difficult time for both my Grandfather and me. We had just lost my Grandmother, his wife of 58 years. Just when we thought things couldn’t get worse, he developed herniated discs in his back that compressed several nerves and caused severe leg pain. The pain rendered him almost completely immobile. Now a once extremely active & vivacious 82 year old was confined to his home, and a wheelchair to move any considerable distance. He was on a cocktail of pain medications whose side effects were often times worse than the pain itself. For an entire year we went from doctor to doctor, medication to medication, in desperate hopes of finding a solution. We felt as if the medical community was unwilling to bother because of his age. We were devastated and running out of hope. I prayed every night as I watched my Grandfather slowly give up on life. It was the most helpless feeling I’ve ever experienced. Then one day, the blessing I had been praying for arrived. That blessing was you. You were compassionate and understanding, and determined to give a great man a second chance at life. And even though we knew and accepted the risks of such a surgery on a man my Grandfathers age, we had full confidence that you would do all you could to ensure success. And what a success it was! He was in almost no pain just days after the surgery. And now, a year later, he is active and enjoying life to the fullest. Dr. Cyr, there will never be enough words to express how thankful we are for all you’ve done. You are an angel, and we wish you continued success in all you do.

I really wanted to stop today and say just how great I have been feeling since my surgery. I just want to say thank you for everything. You and Eloy Castenada have done so much for me. I’d also like to say thanks to the entire staff at The Spine and Orthopeadic Institute. Everyone involved with me and my case have been fantastic. You see, a year ago I was so desperate for some relief from the terrible back pain I was experiencing due to chronic back problems and two previously unsuccessful spine surgeries. I have been suffering with back pain and degenerative disk problems for at least the last fifteen years. The two unsuccessful surgeries really multiplied my pain to the point where I did not know who or where to go and the pain itself was almost completely unbearable.

I had two previous surgeries by another doctor. The first surgery was a 2-Level Spinal Fusion at L3-L4 to L5-S1. The procedure was from the back only and the doctor was using something called BMP along with rods and screws. He said this would work and everything would be fine. The first year following surgery was a very trying, painful and difficult year, but somehow I managed through the pain. Well, after the first year this doctor had me in for a second surgery to remove all the hardware in my back. This is when the real problems starting happening. I was in extreme pain almost from the time I woke up from surgery until I came to see you. I spent an entire year in absolutely excrutiating pain. As it turned out I had almost no spinal support whatsoever after these surgeries.

My first visit was with Eloy Casteneda, not only was Eloy empathetic to my situation but he assured me that together, you would look at everything carefully and do all you could to help. After some X-Rays and review of the MRI’s I provided, he was very positive that you could help me. He ordered additional tests and called for my records from various doctors. To make a long story short, after complete consultation I decided to move forward with a three level spinal fusion from L2-L3 to L5-S1. Only, this surgery would include bone grafts from my hip and from bone donors. The surgery would also be done to both the back of my spine as well as the front. I was a little skeptical but the pain was so great any hope was all I needed and the reassurance I received from you and Eloy gave me confidence.

I remember the morning of surgery, I was definitely nervous. When I woke I was in the ICU, the care there was great. I did not have this type of care following my previous surgeries. The level of attention I received was far superior and made my recovery in the hospital much easier. The pain management program you ordered for me was also far superior and my level of pain following surgery was much more controlled. In fact, the entire program you had post-operative was far better than anything previous I received from the other surgeon. I noticed almost immediately that my back pain was different. Yes, I had pain, but I was able to move around in bed right away, I hadn’t been able to move that freely for the past year. I was up and walking the next day and by the 4th day I was ready to go home.

During the next several months recovering at home I could literally feel myself healing. I was able to move around quicker and I felt like things were improving a little everyday. Today it has been 10 months since my surgery and I feel so much better. My surgery was big and I have the scars to prove it but my pain is so much less now than before. I recall saying my pain was an “8”, I wanted to say 10 but who would have believed that. Today I would say my pain is a 3, I still get a little fatigued if I try to do too much but I can do so much more than before. I am active again, I feel healthier and I look forward to a day when my pain is a “0”. My goal is to get there and with more time, physical therapy and stretching I should make it.

I don’t think anyone else could have done for me what all of you have done. I am grateful for how well I am feeling, I didn’t think anyone would be able to fix the problems from the first 2 surgeries. Frankly, I don’t know how long I could have lasted with the pain I was in. I feel like I’ve got a second chance and a new back. I want to tell everyone out there who has serious back problems to come and see you, that the wait is worth it, that there are people who really care about your back problems and really want to help. I do want others to know this, but more importantly I want you to know exactly how I feel.

Thank you again for everything. I know it isn’t quite over yet but together we’re getting there.

Sincerely,

Lisa Grona-Takacs

This is my testimony to the wonderful care I receive from Eloy, Dr. Cyr and all the staff at the Spine and Orthopedic Institute.

When I first came to Dr. Cyr in 2006, I had already had spine surgery, but continued to have problems and chronic back pain. At the Spine and Orthopedic clinic, I received the most professional and compassionate care ever expected. After undergoing two years of injections to alleviate the pain, Dr Cyr and I agreed to have surgery.

I am an elementary Special Education teacher and was having difficulty performing my regular classroom duties. Prior to having the surgery, I was placed on medical leave pending the surgery. Undergoing this type of surgery was a frightening thing, but I knew that I would be fine in the care of Eloy. He reassured me and educated me completely throughout the preparation of the surgery. He is an exceptional man. He was there to hold my hand and assist Dr Cyr through my nine hour disc replacement. Dr. Cyr is an exceptional surgeon and has been blessed with a great talent. My surgery was a complete success, and I recovered just as Dr. Cyr said I would. I was able to return to school 12 weeks after my surgery.

It’s been one year since my surgery, and my spine is doing well. The outcome that was expected is now here because of the magnificent work of Dr. Cyr.

I began seeing Dr. Cyr and Eloy Castaneda in early 2006 for neck pain after having surgery with Dr. F, a neurosurgeon. Dr. F did a fusion at the C6 and C7 levels which did not help my arm pain. Dr. F was surprised after surgery when my pain continued and said it should have improved, nothing more. I decided to get a second opinion with Dr. Cyr. Dr. Cyr ordered an MRI and CT scan of my neck and told me I had pressure on a nerve in my neck where Dr. F did the surgery. Dr. Cyr did surgery to remove this pressure on this nerve and my pain went away.
I now only have my family see Dr. Cyr and Eloy for spine surgery. He is an excellent surgeon. He thoroughly explained every MRI and CT scan. He did a good physical exam and spent a lot of time with me and my wife explaining the surgery in detail. I highly recommend Dr. Cyr and believe he is the best spine surgeon in Texas.

It was about 2 years ago that I injured myself at work. My bosses refered me to Workmens Compensation who then send me to see a physician in Concentra Medical Center.

I was diagnosed with a severe herniation of the L5 S1 disk. From there I was refered to Dr. Steven Cyr for surgery. My experience with Dr. Cyr as well as Eloy Castaneda has been incredible. When I first went to them I had extreme back and leg pain. Numbness of my foot and extreme weakness. Dr. Cyr began treatment immediately. They treated my family like their own, explaining everything to them as well as me and making it more understandable and bearable for me. Dr. Cyr performed a one level fusion in January 4, 2009, and after the surgery I have been incredibly well, The pain is not completely gone, but I feel so much better, I can feel my leg and although is still weak, it is not as weak as it was before, I have regain my confidence back. and I am active again. I still have to do Physical therapy and I still have a long way to fully recover.

I will trust no other doctor with my spine than Dr. Cyr and Eloy Castaneda.

Dr. Steven Cyr is a remarkable surgeon. He possesses a rare quality that not many doctors today have. That is the ability to make you feel like you are his only patient.

I have had ankylosing spondalitis for 33 years - most of my adult life. I have had chronic neck pain for about the last 12 years. My doctors have tried to get the muscles to relax with botox injections, marcaine injections, lidocaine patches and finally steriod injections. They would help for about 4 - 6 weeks and then I would go back for another round of injections.

Dr. Cyr preformed a C3-C7 Laminectomy and C3-T1 PSIF. I am now seven months from the surgery and am thankful every day that I had the surgery and that Dr. Cyr was my surgeon. It has literally been years since I have been this pain free. I had forgotten what normal people could feel like.

I know that the Lord blessed me with Dr. Cyr as sure as I know that Dr. Cyr has been blessed by God with an amazing surgical talent.

God bless all of these wonderful surgeons for giving so much of themselves to their patients.

Dr. Joel Nilsson:

I had suffered from numbness, tingling and pain in both my hands for over a year and a half. I researched what my options were before undergoing any treatment. I had seen the Brown hand center ads and thought about it. I presented for evaluation with Dr. Nilsson and discussed my treatment options. He treated me with splints, injections, stretching and medicine. These treatments did not help for very long. My symptoms progressively worsened. I woke up ever night with severe pain in my thumb, index and long finger tips, in addition to complete numbness in my hands. I was frustrated and upset as the condition was significantly effecting my life. My hands fell asleep while driving. I could not write a check with having to take a break due to the cramping and pain in my hand.

I went back to Dr. Nilsson, he discussed surgery with me, at my request, in great detail. The right hand was done 1st on a Thursday. The surgery took 10 minutes. My numbness and tingling was gone immediately after surgery. I wasn't sure what to expect, regarding pain, after surgery so I took a pain pill when I got home. The pain was never significant enough to require any more narcotic pain medication so I only took ibuprofen from that point. I really didn't need to take any ibuprofen, or pain medicine, after the 2nd day. I was able to return to work in a modified capacity on the following Monday, 4 days later.

The left hand was performed on a Saturday, about 3 weeks later. I did not need any pain medicine whatsoever after surgery. I returned to work on Monday, 2 days later. I am over 2 months out from surgery and my scars at this point are nearly imperceptible. I only have 1 small incision on each wrist. There were no sutures to remove.

I cannot speak highly enough about this doctor. He has been a blessing. I do not know anymore about the Brown hand center than what I have seen on TV. What I do know is that there is no way that they can do a better job than Dr. Nilsson, in my opinion. I will never consult any other orthopedic surgeon for my problems. I will never allow my family to see anyone other than Dr. Nilsson. I truly cannot say enough about this doctor.

I have been under the care Spine and Orthopaedic since 2007, after using another orthopedic Doctor in the San Antonio area and having felt like just a number, I visited them for treatment of a myriad of problems I was having. My Mother was treated by Eloy Casteneda for a shoulder injury and without having to undergo surgery, Mr. Casteneda worked with her to almost completely rid her of all her pain. Her testimony was the reason I visited with them. I hope that my testimony will help anyone who reads this an opportunity to give themselves a chance to be rid of the daily chronic pain that they may have. Dr. Neilsen operated on my shoulder and did a terrific job, and worked on my trigger finger and has almost helped it return to normal. They treat everyone as if they are part of the family, and listen attentively as Doctors should. Keep up the GREAT work!

Dr. Nilsson is always very punctual and staff also very professional yet friendly. Doesn't necessarily make one feel like you are at a MDs office. All great experience (except for the injury)!

My introduction to this clinic and “lucky break” was as a reluctant patient suffering from a broken finger that was the result of a fall. I was given a referral to Dr. Nilsson.

I soon learned that these nice people could possibly help me find relief from my persistent, intense, skeletal pain as well. I am glad I asked Dr. Nilsson for his assistance and opinions.

Thanks to Dr. Nilsson’s skilled hands, my hand works. Not only does Dr. Nilsson have the gift of healing, but also he is kind and empathetic. Most important to me, he is a compassionate listener, a virtue for which I will be forever grateful. Thank you Dr. Nilsson.

Thanks to Eloy Castenada, who, even though I posed a physical and emotional challenge, persisted in keeping his promise that because of his knowledgeable experience and confidence in his partners there was a fix for my pain. At the end of a long road of tests, tears, hugs, and consultations, and with Dr. Cyr’s skilled help, Eloy was true to his word, there was a fix. Thank you Eloy.

Thanks to Dr. Cyr who with his conservative approach to his calling, spent a lot of time reviewing my tests, x-rays, and MRI’s and with his impeccable knowledge of the abilities given to him found a way to heal a lot of my pain. He patiently took great care to educate me about my frailties and the leap of faith that I had to ponder in order to realize this hope for relief. The healing process of the discectomy and fusion is now well under way, as promised. The attention to my well being on Father’s Day weekend was very, very reassuring. I know this was family time for all. I have immense admiration for Dr. Cyr’s confidence and his passion for his work that brought us to this point. Thank you Dr. Cyr.

Thanks to the “Front Line”, the nursing staff and the office staff. James and Ernie, who are always so attentive, all the girls, (I know I would leave out someone’s name if I tried to name names), who are always patient and understanding and to Damian for his visits at the hospital. Thank you.

I am proud to say that I have this caring team on my side.

Sincerely,
Pat Williams

Dr. Steven Cyr:

My name is Robert Ruiz, I am a firefighter/paramedic with the San Antonio Fire Department, and I would like to share my experiences and interactions regarding Dr. Steven Cyr and his medical staff.

I was injured on duty in June of 2010. I was diagnosed with a herniated L5-S1 disc with radiculopathy in my left leg. After going through aquatic therapy and physical therapy with no improvement, I was referred to Dr. Cyr by my primary doctor. I met with Dr. Cyr and his staff for my initial evaluation and MRI review. He patiently took the time to review my MRI, conduct a detailed physical exam, and explain his findings to me in detail. We then discussed my treatment options.

Dr. Cyr’s recommendation was that we start conservatively and try steroid injections. He also inquired how my pain medications were working for me. I told him they really were not helping me. He explained that muscle relaxors and narcotic pain meds were not my only or best option. He told me he thought I would benefit from Lyrica and took the time to explain the drug to me and why he thought it would help me. He made sure I understood everything and that he answered all my questions before he left the room. I left the appointment very satisfied and impressed by Dr. Cyr. He took the time to address all of my questions and concerns in a very personable and professional manner. I was impressed that a surgeon would advise me not to rush into surgery, but instead to try to exercise all other options first. Something he told me has stood out to me as being the perfect example of his personable approach to patient care. He explained his recommendation for my treatment plan would be the same advice he would give to a member of his own family.

Two days after starting the Lyrica I noticed a huge difference in my pain levels. For the first time in 2 months I was not miserable. I owe that to Dr. Cyr, as none of the other doctors I had seen even mentioned Lyrica as an option. I think that is a testament to Dr. Cyr’s ability to devise a comprehensive care plan, tailored to each individual patient, for maximum effectiveness. However, even with the Lyrica and 2 steroid injections over the next several months, I had no relief. At the time I made an appointment to see Dr. Cyr to discuss my options. He told me we were out of options and discussed surgery. He explained the different surgical procedures that were available to me. He also discussed the pros and cons of each one as it pertained to my specific case. Once again he spent a lot of time with me, answering questions and making sure I understood everything. We decided on an open discectomy, which was scheduled for January 2009.
The morning of the surgery we went over the procedure again and what I could expect. He was honest and truthful and did not make a bunch of false promises as to my outcome. All he promised was that he would do the best he could for me. I appreciated his honesty and candor, as I don’t think many surgeons would be so frank. Going into surgery I felt calm and safe knowing I was in the hands of an exceptional surgeon. After the surgery, Dr. Cyr came into my room and explained everything he found and what he did during the surgery. He had another surgery to do but later came back to my room again to check on me. He answered all my questions and then left with the instructions to call him if I had any problems. I was discharged the next day and had several follow up appointments with Dr. Cyr over the next few months.

My outcome since my surgery has been better than I expected, and I think I owe it all to Dr. Cyr and his staff. I believe Dr. Cyr possesses a rare combination of competence, skill, integrity, compassion, and personality. I feel extremely fortunate that I was referred to him. I would not hesitate to see him again for any future surgical needs; in fact, I would insist on it! I would also strongly recommend him to anyone else needing an exceptional spinal surgeon.

Thank you,

I was referred to Dr Cyr at Wilford Hall by my PCM because of my constant back & leg pain.  First off, I have to say, I have nothing but love, praise & admiration for Dr Cyr. He is simply the BEST.  He is fantastic, knowledgeable, competent, handsome, compassionate & loving. After he reviewed my MRI Dr Cyr asked me if I would consider having back surgery.  My immediate response was NO because I had a failed surgery in June 2000 which made my pain even worse than before the surgery.  I told him I did not want to go through the same helpless feeling I experienced after my surgery in 2000.  We talked at length about what the surgery would entail. I told Dr Cyr I would discuss it with my family & would let him know. When I walked out of his office, all I could think of was Dr Cyr and how confident he was that he could correct my back problems. I had gone through years of steroid injections in my back at civilian pain management clinics to relieve the pain.  All to no a!
vail.  In the spring of 2010 I decided to go ahead with the surgery but I told Dr Cyr I would like to wait until November 2010 to allow me to build up my leave at work.  Dr Cyr agreed to schedule the surgery for November 4, 2010 (Election day).  Throughout my meetings with Dr Cyr prior to the surgery, he was caring & compassionate. He reassured me everything would be okay.  I felt safe in his hands. My surgery lasted 15 hours.  Now I feel GREAT!!!  All, thanks to Dr Cyr.  I am sorry he is retiring from the military because I am selfish and won\'t get to see him again.  But, I wish him the best because he is the BEST and I highly recommend him.

Dr Cyr, may God's Blessings upon you & your family be abundant.

Congratulations Dr. Cyr!

Your name was mentioned in this weeks Press Ganey Survey by patient Marie Pollok. Marre said you are an excellent doctor and North Central Baptist hospital should be known as having the best-trained spinal doctors.

Thank you for everything you do.

I have long wanted to write my thanks to Dr. Cyr and Dr. Castaneda, but how do you really thank someone who has literally given you your life back? I suppose I should really thank Dr McKee for referring me to them.

After years of migraines and other neck problems and weeks of hospitalization at a time under heavy sedation for pain, I could not fake my way thru the days any longer. These wonderful people found my problem. My head and neck felt SO heavy and were actually falling off of my shoulders due to poorly done previous surgeries. They took me apart from C2-T4 and for the first time in yrs I was migraine free.

Yes, the time you spend in the waiting room might be a bit long some days, but it is worth every minute of the wait. They give each patient the time they need to explain their problems and feelings to the Dr. about their case, as well as the time it takes for the Dr. to explain their findings to you, over and over again until you as the patient understand the situation. No, these guys are the best!!! Eloy makes you laugh when you feel like you just can't ever again, bless his heart.

My surgery was on a Sunday and I could only wonder about their families and the time spent away from them, and feel even more grateful for their attentions and what time do these guys sleep?

All I will ever be able to say about either of them or their staff, is that they are great people, highly qualified in their field, but more than that, they still maintain that most important quality...that warm human quality.

They are not in this for the money, but for the people, and you can feel it in the room the minute they walk in and they LOVE a challenge! Don't tell them it can't be done because they will try their best to find the way to do it. They have all of the latest cutting edge techniques down pat.

I would never hesitate to recommend these Drs. to anyone that I felt might benefit from their knowledge and expertise.

I will personally be eternally grateful, as will my family.

If loyalty counts, you have my vote!

I would like to Thank DR. Steven Cyr, Eloy Castaneda, and the entire Staff at Spine & Orthopaedic Institute for the First Class Care and Professionalism they provided to me and my family. I believe God led them in the medical field for their willingness to help people, and to see thier patients live a pain free life. I Truly feel Dr.Cyr and Eloy Castaneda cared personally about how I felt, and what would be best for me. Never once did they come off as being an uptight rude person. With all the stress a physician usually encounters and all the long hours they put in, and time away from thier loved ones, They still showed the passion of wanting to comfort our worries. For this yall will always will be in my heart and prayers. May God Bless each and every one of you for all that yall do. Dr Steven J. Mayo Clinic or no Mayo Clinic, Dr. Cyr is one of the finest physician’s I have been blessed to know! I'm no family member nor am I staff. I am an actual patient. A patient whom a doctor (Dr. M) threw away like yesterdays newspaper. Call it slander if you will but I call it being totally disabled at the age of 36. Dr. M sliced and diced my back 8 times. Every time looking into my naive eyes and saying to me and I quote "if I didn't believe this was the best thing for you I wouldn't have even brought it up". I've got witnesses!

After my 8th procedure, I awoke to terrible pain in the left thigh and leg more so even then the actual surgical area. I was told the pain would go away by Dr. M and was sent home by another physician whom I don’t believe I had ever met after 3 days. Dr. M wasn't on call after all it was the weekend!

A few months later, two I believe I receive a letter from Dr. M telling me he was no longer going to see Workers Comp. patients but he was going to refer me to a fellow co-worker who would take care of me. Not to be!!!! Everyone I was sent to eventually send me packing. An injury this old, 1991 to be exact, was too old and Dr. M had done too much to me. I recall on of "his fellow co-worker" saying to me 8 surgeries is 7too many for me to help you out at this point, and I don't see why Dr. M thinks anyone will take this case.

After years of suffering with tremendous pain and finding no one to help me I was told about Dr. Cyr. Though he couldn’t be my treating doctor because of his devotion to his country I had finally found a sympathetic ear. We followed each other for 2 year finally to have him see me as his patient through referral from my awesome and also sympathetic treating doctor Dr. Efrem Castillo.

By this time I had "severe iatrogenic scoliosis at L1-2 measuring approximately 25 degrees w/convexity to the left, flat back deformity and multiple disc collapse! I never had scoliosis before this. I know what it is and don't consider myself ignorant enough to not have known so.

Now I can only ambulate with a walker, take Morphine as well as many other Narcotics just for daily living. Note this is the way I came to Dr. Cyr after all that Dr. M had done to me.All this is well documented in my op. report. By the way the operation Dr. Cyr did took several hours and as much as I would have loved for it to have taken only 2 to 3 hours as had all my 8 previous surgeries I don't think it was possible at this point! Oh and by the way come to find out that I have an Avulsed L4 nerve and several lacerated root sleeves. This was never mentioned to me by Dr. M nor is it in they copy of my op. report, the last one he did when I woke up with all that left leg pain. Oh well call it a case of Bad Luck if you will or was it a case of Bad Doctoring? Neither Dr. Cyr nor any of his staff have to bad-mouth anyone about my case, I HAVE PLENTY TO SAY! Well all being said and done I have a much straighter back thanks to Dr. Cyr and Elloy Castaneda. I'm still not able to ambulate without a walker but it isn't like you can superglue and avulsed nerve together now can you? I will always have to take Narcotics for this problem.

At least I now know what happened to me. I also know that I have finally met a doctor who cares about his patients and not so much about monetary gain.

I thank you VERY much from the bottom of my heart your kindness, your encouragement & your professionalism. I came into your office with very little hope and you all took the time to talk me through and explain my films in detail to my understanding & knew before the films returned what the problem was.

Dr. Cyr, I appauld you and your staff in sceduling my appointments & my pre-op, surgery, and Post-op visit. I knew at the hospital & even more so at the 6 wk post-op visit that you all were a God sent. I saw the x-ray and how well tings were fused and time & care you provided to explain the same. My previous two fusions, I knew w/o being a doctor were not working. My first was in 2005 & second 2006 and never did I have the confidence in the surgery working like I have with you.

I imagine your ears are constantly ringing, because I tell everyone I see (whether I know them or not) that what the "other" so called nuero-surgeon couldn't do in 4 years and two surgeries & many intervention in between, you accoplished in 6 weeks through surgery.

My greatest gratitude to you. I will recommend you to anyone with any type of spinal injury. In fact, I have had one person that I recommened to you, already had her 1st appt and shares my same feelings.

The best to you and your endeavors. I actually knew you were a God sent because I pick you out of the phone book because of your address (Spurs Lane), and I love my Spurs. However, little did I know loving my Spurs would bring such a blessing. Thanks again.

I wanted to post a review for Dr. Cyr and Eloy Castaneda Dr. Niilson and the staff at the Spine & Orthopaedic Institute. I have suffered from migraines for over 8 years. I have been on every drug known including depression meds, anxiety meds, muscle relaxers, and numerous more with no relief.

On my first visit in comes Eloy with a smile so bright and twinkling eyes and stated don't worry we will find out what is wrong and we will make you better... On my second or so visit I met with Eloy and Dr. Steven Cyr, wow, what could I say but I know you will help me.....I have been migraine free for months now, I think the ease and the attitude of the staff allows patients to go in and for once not feel stressed out.........

I have and will recommend Eloy and Dr. Cyr to my friends or even people on the street. For once I have met a medical staff who cares about you not the almighty $$$$$$$$....I appreciate the care you have given not only myself but my sister.. to Eloy, Dr. Cyr, Stephanie, Norma, Jennifer, Mannie and Bryan!! Thanks and all my love to you all!

I wanted to leave a few words about my medical care at SA Spine and Orthopedic Clinic!! I have not had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Cyr yet but have had nothing but the best of care under Eloy Castaneda! The very first thing you notice about him is his smile and his genuine care for you as his patient! He unlike most physicians actually sat and listened to my descriptions of my injuries and pain after a MVA. I had gone through months of physical therapy, which was a waste of time, co pays and insurance money (my opinion of course). He right away had xrays ordered and determined that i indeed had an injury that no one else took the time to try and identify! He's always available for consult, always shows genuine interest and desire to help his patients. His office staff has the same great attitudes. Nothing like walking into an office where they see hundreds of patients, and they call you by name..every single time! I actually look forward to going to my appointments with Eloy! You leave there with a pep in your step! Don't let what one nasty person sway you from getting the best spine or orthpaedic care thats available to you ; either with Eloy, Dr. Cyr or Dr. Niilson. You wont be disappointed! I have the uptmost respect and appreciation for your concern and are Eloy, Stephanie, Norma, Jennifer,Mannie and Bryan!! Thanks and love to you all! CH

Just want to send you a BIG THANK YOU for all that you have done for Don and me. You’ve gone beyond the call of duty to ensure that Don has received beyond the best care and an excellent outcome. I don’t know how else to thank you besides the best way that I know; and that is telling you all thank you from my heart and soul. You’re truly God Sent and Angels.

Dr. Cyr (Steven) the hands and mind that God gave you have touched Don and our lives. Because of you he will be once again able to administer to animals. By doing this we will be able to finally open our petting farm which will be used to help children and adults with disabilities. We also want to thank your wife and kids for the time that you are away from them to care for your patients (extended family). There have been several times that you spent more time with us than you did with your immediate family.

Eloy your attitude is great and your smile and words can warm the heart. I’m glad that Don is out of the hospital the only thing I miss about the hospital is the talks that we had and the comfort you were able to provide to me during Don’s hospital stay. The numerous hours you spent with us will not be forgotten. Stephanie, Meowy and Fraidy are lucky to have you in their lives.

Janivee thank you for taking your job so seriously and going the extra miles to Don and I had everything in order. Without your diligence Don wouldn’t have gotten so far.

Jennifer, Norma and Manny thanks for your support and all the time you’ve spent with us.

Brian how can anyone forget Brian. You’re NUTS and we love you for it. Seeing Don laughing on 2/29/08 almost brought tears to my eyes. You know how long he was in tremendous pain and just wasn’t a happy camper. Your antics are just what Don needed.

Thanks again so much. God has touched each of you in such a special way.

I heartedly recommend the medical office of San Antonio Spine & Orthopedic Institute. I can do this, with conviction, because I was successfully treated for a serious lower spine injury. Initially, my injury was misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated by a local ‘occupational injury clinic’, which lead to further injury. Upon discovery, they immediately referred me to San Antonio Spine & Orthopedic Institute. My first visit convinced me that I was in the right place: Dr Castenada straight away knew, by the symptoms I described, what the problem was. He sent me for a MRI, which exactly confirmed his diagnosis. From that point forward I confidently knew I was going to get the best possible medical treatment for the injury. Walking, standing or lying down, for prolonged periods, prior to surgery was impossible. Now, 10 months post surgery, I am almost back to the person I was before the injury. My recovery rate has been far faster than the established estimates for my type of injury. I attribute this success to the technical skills of Dr Steven Cyr. Additionally, intangibles such as dedication, compassion, commitment, understanding and communication, for both the patient and their family are unexcelled. These accolades are not limited to the Doctors, but also include the support staff of the Institute. I am a very appreciative man.

The intent of this letter has many purposes, first and foremost, to sincerely thank you all for your dedication to my health and family during such a difficult time in my life. There are no words that can express the gratitude we have for all you have done, above and beyond what the ‘norm’ is for caring for patients with injuries such as mine.

I came to you as a patient through a personal referral, George Gonzaba, who is a dear friend of mine. He simply picked up the phone during a meeting and called his brother, Greg and asked him to contact Eloy out of concern for the amount of pain I was in and the ‘unknown’ severity of my injuries. In the lifetime, I have learned that when you treat others with kindness and human decency , it is returned ten-fold through blessings, including the fact that your practice, in the middle of a location move, accepted an immediate appointment for me to meet with Eloy. What came after that is I became a patient of a ‘family’ of caregivers who would comfort me through the difficulties of my treatment.

I will go back to the beginning by explaining my nature and character, which many of you already know just from spending the past year and a half serving my health care needs. When I was initially injured in the auto accident, I naturally sought the advice of my manager, who instructed me to go to a chiropractor. Within the next 5 months, June 2007-November 2007, I afforded Dr. Woywood the same courtesy and trust that should be given to an accredited medical professional. As my treatment continued and I felt ‘some’ relief from the thoracic and lumbar pain, I still questioned the numbness, tingling and loss of strength in my right arm. On November 30th, Dr. Woywood adjusted my neck which resulted in a loud “pop” that lead to temporary paralysis to the entire right side of the body. I had requested an MRI on two separate occasions, both of which Dr. Woywood responded, “comp won’t pay for it.”

The reason this is key is that this occurrence is what brought me to your care. Once the MRI results were obtained, I was in awe of the fact that the severity of my injuries were at the level they were. Again, I had put my trust in my physician, and felt somewhat ‘betrayed’ that he did not do everything necessary to prevent the series of events that ended up in a life-threatening surgery and a total disruption of my life as I knew it. I have lost my health, my confidence and my career that I have put all I had into for the past 5 years. Imagine being fully healthy, successful in a career you love, financially stable and the next things you hear is ‘you need to get your affairs in order.’

I want to make clear that I completely understand the necessity of your business decision to discontinue serving TWCC patients, as I am also someone who is caught up in the ‘system.’ I respect what you all do and have watched your team grow from 4 persons to a well-run, well–oiled machine that serves its patients with due diligence. It was a pleasure, even though my misery, to witness the authentic care that ALL patients received, regardless of their injury or method of payment. That is how I live my life….serve and treat others as you wish to be served and treated.

In conclusion, I am saddened to say ‘goodbye’ to all of you who have cared for me and my family and to Dr. Cyr and Eloy who saved my life. I will forever be grateful for all of the special attention given when I was at my lowest point . I wish you much success and am honored to have had the opportunity to be treated by all of your staff. My family also extends their thanks.

God’s blessings to you All,

Dr. Steven Cyr, Eloy, Stephanie, Jennifer, Norma, Brian, etc. are great. We have never felt this way about a doctor before. We do have favorites and doctors we would recommend; but, none of them is even close to how we feel about Dr. Cyr. When you listen to the recorded message on his phone it states that they treat you like family. Well, I thought about this. They treated us better than family. A family you can't choose, friends you can. We feel that the lord has sent a us a friend. This friends was given the gift and talent to change people’s lives. He is part angel, part magician. Other doctors didn't want to even attempt the difficult surgery; they also didn't even look at test to determine that without surgery my husband would be crippled. Dr. Cyr and Eloy noticed this immediately. They also told us what to watch for. My husband started having some of the symptoms that were discussed with us. Turned out his first surgery was an emergency. Dr. Cyr and Eloy arranged to have the surgery performed on a weekend. They assembled all the staff at the hospital and made sure he was cared for in the most stringent way. Did I mention he is an angel? If you need to consult about any Spine or Orthopedic issue I wouldn't proceed without first meeting Dr. Cyr and his team. Oh yeah, my husband is doing much better and is awaiting his second surgery which will not be as complicated as the first. (Still is risky.) We trust this man so much. Another thing is Dr. Cyr's brother Mike is also an outstanding individual. He handles medical equipment. Mike knew that we needed the equipment and it was close to a holiday. The company that our insurance covers couldn't be reached due to holidays. You know what Mike did. He left his and Steven's mother’s birthday party and drove to our house with the equipment my husband needed. The are angels and Dr. Cyr and Eloy are two of them.

Dr. Cyr, i have never met a doctor that took so much time with his patients like you and Eloy do. You both made me feel relaxed and confident that I was going to be taken care of. When I was facing a very long and major surgery you took the time to explain every detail, risk and advantage to me and my family. You knew I was scared and not real sure what to do but, with your explaination I had no doubt that this was going to be the right thing to do. When I had my first visit to your office both of you said that you would treat me like family and that has been exactly how I have felt the entire time. I am almost 3 months out from my surgery. I am still having some problems and I know I have a VERY long rode still ahead but, I know that the both of you will walk me through every step along the way and along with both of you and your staff I know I will be 100% one of these days. Thank you all, I know I could not have done this without you. God has blessed all of you with a very special gift and any patient would be lucky to have a physician like you!! Love you all!!!!!

I too have had terrible migraines for years with persistent neck pain all other doctors told me it was due to stress and just gave me all sorts of medications. After visiting with Eloy one afternoon about a herniated disk in my lower back I happened to mention my symptoms to him. He immediately sent me for an MRI of my neck and found that I have 2 herniated disks in my neck. Thank you Eloy for taking the time to actually perform tests before assuming my headaches and neck pain were due to a common ailment andnot treating me as other doctors have by treating me like I was making my symptoms up or exaggerating them.

I had struggled with a persistent shoulder injury for the past year before being referred to Dr. Nilsson. I was worried that my shoulder would never be the same and feared my active lifestyle and career would have to change. After that Initial visit, Dr. Nilsson helped to erase all those fears. I found encouragement from the support of the entire staff and was quickly scheduled for my surgery it was a success and I was returning to work much more quickly than anticipated. Because of the wonderful job Dr. Nilsson did on repairing my shoulder. I am now able to return to the job of my dreams with the confidence that the new shoulder he gave to me will allow me to keep living my dream for many years to come.

Hello,

I want to let everyone know how wonderful Dr. Steven Cyr and Eloy Castaneda are. My story started back on April 14, 2007. I was working for the blood bank and bent down to take a bag of blood off of the blood shaker when I felt an explosion in my lower back. I was sent to Concentra medical center where they diagnosed, what they thought, was a back strain. I was given physical therapy for a few weeks and was not getting any relief, in fact I started getting numbness and tingling down my left leg and increasing pain and weakness with every session. I was finally sent for an MRI when I started losing feeling in my left leg. I was told that I had allot of problems going on in my back and they were going to send me to an Orthopedic surgeon. I was given an appointment and was told to go see Dr. Cyr and I would get fixed up in no time. Obviously I was afraid of the idea of having to think about surgery on my back but with the amount of pain I was in and the numbness that was progressing I had nothing to lose.

Upon my arrival at the Spine Institute I was greeted with an enormous amount of respect from the staff and not just how most patients are treated; fill out these papers and have a seat, we will be with you soon as I had expected but a very welcoming feeling as if they had known me for years. I was put into a room and Eloy walked in and immediately when over my x-rays and MRI films and couldn't\'t believe that they belonged to me due to the damage. He talked to me for a very long time and said that surgery was probably the best course of action but there were tests that would be done and seeing my apprehension told me it would probably not be for a few years but to keep it in the back of my mind just in case.

After some tests I was brought back to the office to discuss the results and was told that he would set me up with Dr. Cyr for some injections to my back and we would see how that worked; he was wanting to go as conservatively as possible for my treatment. When I met Dr. Cyr, as I had felt with Eloy, I knew I was in good hands. Dr. Cyr explained everything, in detail, what he was going to do and what I should expect. Unfortunately the shots did not work and I was told to come in for a consultation with Dr. Cyr and to bring my family if I wished so that we could start discussing surgery. I was extremely afraid to be at this point so soon and so was Dr. Cyr, he said he normally does not even think about surgery any earlier than 2 years and I was only at 2 1/2 months. He explained in great detail about the surgery and answered all the questions my husband and daughter had and we scheduled the surgery for July 14, 2007, 3 months to the day of my injury.

I knew I was in for a long journey but I never expected just how tough it was going to be. After 13 hours in the operating room I woke up in the ICU. I was told there were complications but as a whole everything was a success. I ended up having a triple spinal fusion of L4-5 and S1. At first I had very little feeling in my left leg and decreased feeling in my right along with drop foot of my left foot. I had to learn how to walk again after surgery and I started thinking that surgery may have been a mistake but I was always reassured that with therapy it would all be worth it. After my surgery I was never afraid because of the great care from Dr. Cyr and Eloy. I started to accept that I was not going to be as active as I once was but I had absolutely no back pain anymore.

Well it has been almost 3 1/2 years now and I have almost all of my feeling back in my legs, my drop foot is improving and I am now becoming, almost, as active as before my injury. I have started doing Zumba exercise, which I thought was never going to happen because of my weakness and drop foot, but I am probably 95% back to being fully recovered and most people don\'t even know I have any problems and I owe it all to Dr. Cyr and Eloy, along with their amazing staff.

Thanks again to you all!

Sharon Burton
