Q&A: Dr Cyr, I had spinal fusion surgery a long time ago and I want to build up my bone density I’m curious about your take on low impact vs high impact exercises. ~Jean H.
On low impact vs high impact exercises: the best way to build bone density is weight-bearing exercises, not high-impact exercises. High-impact exercises will increase your chances of having adjacent-level disease and arthritic changes in the spine and joints. My recommendation is to perform non-weight-bearing or low-impact exercises and to build your bone density with calcium and vitamin D supplementation and weight-lifting exercises using strict form.
